Mission Statement
To provide for the health, inspiration and education of the people of California by helping to preserve the state's extraordinary biological diversity, protecting its most valued natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality outdoor recreation.
Description
California Department of Parks and Recreation manages more than 270 park units, which contain the finest and most diverse collection of natural, cultural, and recreational resources to be found within California.
Will Rogers State Historic Park protects and promotes the legacy of Will Rogers, the Cowboy Philosopher - 1920's movie star, newspaper columnist, social commentator, and philanthropist - and his 186 acre ranch in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The park offers several miles of hiking trails, including the eastern terminus of the 60 mile long Backbone Trail through the Santa Monica Mountains. The Ranch House, with all of the Rogers family's original belongings, is on display to the public and docent-led tours of the house interior are available. The only polo field left in Los Angeles is still actively used for games during polo season (April through October).
