To equip children with hearing loss and their families with a foundation for lifelong learning through listening and spoken language and to build productive partnerships in research, professional training, and collaborative outreach programs to promote best practices in language learning for children with hearing loss.
Established in 1999, Chattering Children is a non-profit agency providing an array of services anchored by Auditory Verbal Therapy at our McLean Center and throughout Virginia, DC, and Maryland. The practice is staffed by a transdisciplinary team of professionals in audiology, deaf education, and speech-language pathology with specific expertise in the oral language development of children with hearing loss. The team is skilled in the use of state-of the-art hearing technology and members act as coaches for families to support development of auditory skills, to facilitate spoken language, and to integrate listening and language into the routines of family life. An Auditory Verbal Approach relies on the natural developmental patterns of audition, speech, language, cognition, and communication, and promotes education in inclusive settings from early childhood onwards. Ongoing diagnostic assessments are used to develop individualized treatment plans, to monitor progress and to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention for the child and family. Chattering Children serves a diverse population, deliberately working to provide services to underserved populations. Children served by the practice use either hearing aids or cochlear implants. Many additionally have physical, visual, and learning disabilities. Twenty percent of the practice caseload includes families covered by Medicaid, and another twenty-five percent receive services in their homes contracted through Early Intervention programs in the region. Families served include many who are non-English speaking as well as those who are culturally Deaf.
