Description
The Museum of American Illustration was established in 1981 with funds raised from the Society of Illustrators membership dues and corporate grants. We are located in an 1875 carriage house on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Museum is open to the public free of charge.
The Society was founded in 1901 by a group of nine artists and one advising businessman for the sole purpose of promoting the art of illustration. Prominent members of the Society have included Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth and Charles Dana Gibson with special guests like Mark Twain and Gloria Swanson. Our mission is to promote the art and appreciation of illustration, its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures, and education.
