Mission Statement
The hospice philosophy of care, in practice in New York State for more than two decades, embraces all patients coping with life limiting illnesses and their families. Cabrini Hospice, the first medical center based hospice in the U.S., focuses on comfort care and quality of life rather than cure. Personal choice, dignity, respect, cultural values and family traditions are honored as patients are cared for primarily at home. Current treatments and medications are offered in order to address the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and his or her loved ones.
Description
Cabrini Hospice is a program of the Cabrini Medical Center, which was established at the beginning of the twentieth century by Mother Cabrini, a missionary to the immigrants of New York City. The tradition of caring for underserved populations continues into the twenty-first century. Compassion and caring are hallmark attributes of the Cabrini organization. Cabrini Hospice services include: Home visiting R.N.s to coordinate care and manage pain and other symptoms; direct on-call access to hospice nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week; social workers for counseling, support and coordination with other community services; certified home health aides to assist with personal care; visits from clergy and/or pastoral counselors, if desired; optional music, art, and touch therapies for self expression and relaxation; trained volunteers to provide help and companionship; medications, supplies, and equipment in the home; and, bereavement support for loved ones after the patient's death.
