Mission Statement

El Valor's mission is to support and challenge urban families to achieve excellence and participate fully in community life. Our programs exist to enrich and empower people with disabilities, the disinfranchised and the underserved.

El Valor's vision seeks to be an international model for inclusion of people with disabilities, to be the best in the nation in terms of early childhood and youth enrichment, and to become the premier organization developing Hispanic leadership.

Description

El Valor is a non-profit community-based organization founded in 1973 by the late Guadalupe Reyes, a visionary, leader and a mother who dreamed of a community in which all members, including her son with disability could live, learn and work. With a small bank loan and a borrowed chuch basement in Pilsen, Mrs. Reyes, families from the community with similar needs and volunteers started the first bilingual, bicultural rehabilitation center in the State of Illinois and they called it El Valor, meaning "courage." El Valor has grown into a multicultural, multipurpose organization with a mission that reaches thousands of families throughout the Chicagoland.
