Mission Statement
Our mission is to aid students in their quest for literacy. Our goal is to have all our students on grade level when they complete first grade. Students that are on grade level at the end of first grade are far more likely to succeed in school than those who are not. It is our goal to help all students succeed in first grade. This leads to productive citizens of the community. Backman elementary is classified as a Title One school which means that the students come from homes of poverty. Many of them are English language learners. We need volunteers to help them achieve their great potential
Description
Backman Elementary houses preschool through sixth grade students. We have been a Reading First school focusing on literacy for all students. Daily we dedicate a three hour block to literacy development including phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and writing. We use assessments to ascertain student needs and plan interventions and instruction to fill those needs. Backman is classified as a Title One school due to high poverty levels. We have wonderful families at Backman--wonderful parents and students! However, due to the high poverty levels many parents must work multiple jobs. Therefore, they do not often have the opportunity or the means to volunteer at the school as they would like to. Also, with funding cuts we have fewer paraprofessionals available to tutor students. We desperately need volunteers to help us reach each student’s potential. It is their future and ours that is at stake. Volunteers would be working with education, literacy, children, immigrants and refugees.
