Mission Statement

The High Tea Society (HTS) was founded by Mary Terrell in 1997, as a vehicle to introduce young girls to the rich cultural offerings of the District of Columbia, while also providing a tailored program designed to boost self esteem, inspire academic achievement and create "ambassadors of change." HTS protégés attend D.C. Public Schools, are recruited in the 4th grade and remain in the program until high school graduation and/or college acceptance.

Description

HTS protégés attend D.C. Public Schools and are recruited in the 4th grade. They remain in the program until high school graduation and/or college acceptance.

During the after school program we introduce the girls to life skills - sewing, etiquette, public speaking and also yoga, nutrition and chess. We also provide an opportunity for the girls to reflect on their hopes and dreams in a series of 'Who am I" sessions.

If you are able to help in any of these areas, please join us and share your expertise! Lead a weekly workshop or come and lend a helping hand on a regular basis.

We are looking for volunteers who are committed, energetic, and have a genuine interest in making a positive impact in the lives of young people.

Volunteers will need to agree to a background check and have a TB test taken per DC Public Schools requirement.

We are in two locations within Washington, D.C. One school is located in the Hillcrest area of S.E. The other school is located close to downtown in N.W.

Time frame: 1-2 days a week during the after-school hours of 3 pm to 6 pm from January through early June.

Please contact Mary Terrell at 202-526-4260 for more information about how you can work with our program. You may also email a letter of interest to her at marytea1997@yahoo.com.
