Mission Statement

Our mission is to cultivate students' civic and professional development, meet the needs of our community partners, and provide opportunities for faculty growth and development. We aspire to nurture new community/college partnerships that are reciprocal and sustaining in order to respond to identified needs, build on assets, and promote problem-solving. As a result, our students can gain the skills, knowledge, broadened world view, and a life-long commitment to become active, informed, ethical, and responsible citizens.

Specifically the community-based service-learning program will facilitate the creation of new service-learning opportunities embedded in college coursework, provide logistical and pedagogical support for interested faculty, develop and enhance college-community partnerships, and meet real community needs. We strive to nurture a spirit of collaboration, social responsibility, and respect for all participants - faculty, staff, students, and community partners.

Description

Service-Learning combines service objectives with learning objectives to address real community needs, enhance the learning experience through experiential learning, and explore individual and social values. The service learning components are rooted in active collaborations between Fisher students and Rochester community organizations, schools and agencies. These partnerships emphasize mutual respect, acknowledge the wisdom and skills of the community partners, and assume the reciprocity of the learning experience.
