If you are interested in working with patients remotely from home, we could use your assistance. We are currently looking for volunteer help to call patients while in the hospital to learn how their stay has been. Volunteer candidates must reside in the United States. Remotely, volunteers call patients and introduce themselves, inquire of concerns or needs and how their patient experience has been while in the hospital Volunteers inquire with patients if their emergency contact would like us to call to explain visitation guidelines and hours, and to ensure they have patient’s room phone number/nurse unit phone number. If yes, volunteers will place these calls to family and friends Volunteers will offer and set-up Zoom sessions for patients and family members to connect **Advocate Aurora email will be provided in order to view Teams log sheets containing patient information (name/phone numbers) **Hours of operation: Mon-Fri - any timeframe from 8:30am-7pm CST (Days and hours to volunteer are flexible. Mei volunteers in our Concierge Admission Program (CAP). Mei ling explains what she does through the program and why it is so meaningful to her. One of the things I like about working on the Concierge Admission Program (CAP) are the patients’ lives’ that I touch. While it is not patient contact and you might not get to see the effect, I know that I am leaving a mark on some of those patients - even if it’s just for a moment. I enjoy being able to talk to patients, especially those that seem happy to talk to me. Additionally, even though I am only talking to patients for a brief time, sometimes from those 5 minute phone conversations I feel like I have been able to take a peek into someone’s life. That has given me the ability to feel like I am connecting to each patient on a deeper level and that I am gaining new experiences and perspectives from patients that I have not had before. I believe that one of the things the patients like about interns calling them to relay information and learn of concerns and recognition of the staff is just hearing our voices and knowing that someone does care about them enough to check in (other than of course physicians and nurses). I can only imagine being in the hospital, especially for an extended amount of time and the stress, unfamiliar environment, financial issues, fear of the unknown, etc. that those individuals are feeling. While patients are allowed visitors, sometimes family members and friends aren’t always able to visit. And, with the COVID pandemic, there are still limits and regulations on the number of visitors patients can have in their room. Some of my most favorite calls are with patients who clearly express their gratitude and happiness from our calls. Sometimes their gratitude is expressed in words and sometimes I can just hear it in their voice. Those calls with those patients make me believe that my one phone call to relay information and check up on them made their day. I believe it makes them feel lonely for a moment and reminds them that people do care about them and are taking time to check in on them. I like working with the other CAP interns. The other CAP interns on my shift are very supportive and helpful. I know that I can always go to them if I have a question, need clarification, or want check in. It is a team environment at Aurora with the CAP interns/volunteers. We work together to get the job done and support each other along the way. Another thing I like about working on CAP is the flexibility that it allows. Working with CAP allows me the flexibility to call from home if I am ever sick or unable to come in. The leadership team is very supportive, understanding, and flexible with my needs and my time.
