Mission Statement

As One We Can (AOWC) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization; it was founded in 2008 in response to the increased drop-out rates and spiking crime rates among minority youth. Violence and failure in school is closely associated with the lack of developmental opportunities that are available to students in impoverished neighborhoods. AOWC is focused on closing the developmental gap of youth in underserved communities throughout Chicago. AOWC has designed several programs that focus on diminishing poverty by striving to keep our young people in school, and providing them with skills training, job placement, career exploraiton and future development.

S.M.A.R.T program provides in school assistance with science, math and reading; and after-school tutoring in math and science. This service is offered at no charge to students at our partner schools.

Clear Career is a 5-week career exploration summer workshop. Students explore dozens of career options in management, marketing, finance, medicine, engineering, political science, public relations, and administration. Respective degree programs, colleges, and scholarships will be reviewed. Professionals from some of Chicago's top firms will interact with students to enhance their experience. Resume writing, interview etiquette, and job readiness will be covered. The educational component will ensure students continue to receive Math and English instruction throughout the summer. The following summer, students will be placed into internships at participating businesses. Clear Career runs July - August each year.

Clear Career aligns with AOWC's mission and our focus on giving students a deeper understanding of the benefits of education and to broaden their vision for the future.

Hello,My name is Daryl Steiner,I am a college student/jamskater from Texas. I was not challenged enough in high school,I thought school was a waste of my time. I felt like I was in prison. Skating was my world, my only escape. I wish I had a nice jamskating program in my area that could give me a scholarship if I won, the for all that time I spent skating. I graduated and college is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. money for school is my biggest issue. Plus, having jamskating king and college graduate would be a very motivating tool to get those kids the education they need. inspire them while they are young and the sky is the limit. We need more jam skating scholarships to make jamskating explode into its fullest potential. Only a handfull of people go pro and most give up before the miracle happens. But if they had something more than a plastic trophy for their hard work. With this scholarship, they are skating for thier future.
