The mission of 4-H is to develop a bedrock of life skills like self-esteem, communication, planning, decision making, and teamwork. The Washington State University 4-H Bonney Lake Challenge Program is designed to build positive values and leadership skills in today's youth. 4-H is a world leader in this effort, through the use of experiential, learn-by-doing, activities and research based curricula. The challenge program utilizes adventure based education.The participants develop good communication, decision making & problem solving skills. They learn to plan, set goals, and work together as a team, while developing self-esteem. Reserahc indicates that such skills prevent at-risk youth from becoming troubled, and help troubled youth turn around. They are also the skills needed in the workplace.
WSU 4-H Challenge is an adeventure based experiential education designed to foster team development and personal growth. Challenge uses a series of activities designed to teach life skills through participating in fun outdoor games. Particpants are provided the opportunity to strengthen relationships, improve communication, resolvec onflicts, and develop leadership. Learning to look at what personal and group behaviors increase and decrease the teams' goals are key to 4-H Challenge experiences. Low Elements focus on the team. The team methods are debriefed to find out what behaviors lead to the success and what needs to be modified. High Elements havemore emphasis on individual challenge and accomplsihment but still reuire the support on the team.
