Through education and public service we seek to support the well being of Native American children and to raise public awareness of the stereotyping, discrimination and other unique situations facing all Native Americans.
Changing Winds has several different programs:
Warming Hearts: Each year we hold a winter warmth drive for the children of the most impoverished Indian Reservations in the country.
Bittersweet Winds: Educational presentations that for students as well as teachers to help them understand the ways in which Native Americans are misrepresented in texts and curriculum. Along with our presentations, we have a traveling exhibit entitled Bittersweet Winds.
Hocikala: Our newspaper insert for Lakota children on reservations in South Dakota, dedicated to fun and literacy, and to encourage a vision of a bright future.
Students and Teachers Against Racism: STAR was our first program, originated in 2001. STAR is a resource tool for any educator interested in knowing more about the Native American perspective. Important writings, curriculum, lesson plans as well as other resource materials can be found on our website.
