South Coast Literacy Council has enriched my life tremendously. I have worked weekly at different sites for two years. They offer online training, and you may move into teaching your own group or working with an individual, at your own pace. They provide various texts, but you can tutor using your own style and material if you choose. SCLC has been in the literacy field for years, so they know what they're doing and have the highest respect in south Orange County. Tutoring these lovely adults brings me so much joy. I've made some true friends.

Having never taught before, I was skeptical as to my ability to be successful as a tutor. However, with the proper training and the freedom to be creative this has been the most rewarding volunteer experience I've ever had.

I have volunteered with South Coast Literacy Council for 20 plus years, tutoring two nights a week (my choice) and serving on the board of directors in different positions. Tutoring has been the most fun. I do it in the evenings, and when I feel tired and not really wanting to go out, I go and end up being energized by my students. It is always a rewarding experience!
