Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nation's pre-eminent one-to-one mentoring organization. With over 100 years of experience mentoring children, BBBS is the national model for mentoring best practices. Right here in Essex, Hudson and Union Counties, we have ambitious goals to mentor as many young people as possible in these communities of need.
BBBS screens, trains and pairs volunteers with youth in our community to serve as one-to-one mentors.
The nature of the mentoring sessions is based on a tailor made shared plan based on a number of goals including community service, exposure to new things, and improvement in school, guided by the support and supervision of professionally trained BBBS staff. Mentoring activities can vary (e.g., working on a community service project, tutoring, job shadowin experience, going on college campus tours, going for a walk, reading a book, going to sports events, etc) and take place at any time agreeable to the parent, child and volunteer. The program is offered year-round. BBBS Mentoring is designed to develop a one-to-one relationship with a child and model appropriate communication and conflict resolution skills.
