Description

The Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance (SCRA) is an active and community engaged organization that works to improve the water quality of Shamokin Creek. Running through downtown, the Shamokin Creek has high levels of iron oxide giving it its orange color. SCRA tests for metals and pH in the creek and its tributaries, the group also maintains several water treatment sites. Besides working on water quality the group also works to pick up trash dump sites in the Shamokin area.

For those who read or hear about ‘Clean Coal’ Technology, I recommend traveling to Shamokin and see just how devastating the industry can be on the environment and local economy. Shamokin Creek was once (long ago) a trout stream in Northumberland Co. PA and now is so polluted that no aquatic life can exist. Clean up is so costly and the area is so depressed that nothing is done. Grass root efforts such as SCRA are helping t bring attention to this worthy cause. Clean up of Shamokin Creek is not just a Central PA issue because Shamokin Creek dumps its polluted waters into the mighty Susquehanna and on to the Chesapeake Bay. If you live down stream on Shamokin Creek or downstream of Sunbury, PA on the Susquehanna or Bay then supporting this effort is in your interest because we all live downstream.
