Mission Statement

The Friends of History at Portland State University is a group of volunteers made up of alumni, graduate students, and indivuduals who believe that the Department of History at PSU offers a strong program worthy of community attention and support.

The Friends of History promotes excellence in the teaching and the study of history within the University and works throughout the school year to bring public attention to this resource through our free programs (lectures, seminars and workshops) which are produced as part of our outreach to the city and the community PSU serves.

In an age increasingly dependent on technology, the Friends of History share a conviction that the disciplines inherent in historical analysis are vital not only to the preservation of the humanities, but to all sound thinking.

The programs produced by the Friends of History cover all areas of history including World History, European History, the History of Exploration, Environmental History, Military History, Medical History and Constitutional History. The Friends of History gives equal weight to programming for all areas of and eras of American History including Womens History, Black History, Asian and Pacific Islander History, Hispanic American History, and other under-represented groups. Our programs are open to the public and held on the PSU campus.

Membership in the Friends of History or participation in any activity of the Friends of History , shall not be denied to any individual or abridged on account of race, gender, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability.
