Mission Statement
To work together as informed consumers for after-death arrangements that embrace our needs, preferences and rights.
Description
FCA of the Piedmont is among the newest of about 100 FCA chapters throughout the U.S.--and a vital, active one at that.
We've already compiled the first price and compliance survey of local funeral providers, offering side-by-side comparisons of their prices on common funeral goods and services as well as their compliance with federal consumer protection regulations. In the process of doing the survey, we advocated for consumers when the N.C. Board of Funeral Service said it didn't have to abide by the Funeral Rule of the FTC--and won.
We worked with faith communities to host a weekend symposium on end-of-life options and issues that reached 120 people. We've made presentations to community groups, fielded dozens of telephone inquiries, and been featured in the news media both locally and nationally.
Our members are active at the state and national levels too. One led a national initiative that produced the first group manual on how to conduct and support do-it-yourself funerals, which are legal in 44 states, including North Carolina.
We don't have a brick-and-mortar presence. But our members are indeed making a big difference for funeral consumers in the Piedmont.
Our services include:
- A resource binder on end-of-life planning
- Price and compliance surveys of funeral providers
- Presentations to area groups
- Workshops, seminars and other special events
- The Piedmont Triad Thanatology Book Club
