Mission Statement

The Maryland Choral Society strives to be a leading force in the advocacy and enhancement of the choral arts industry, to cultivate educational opportunities, to nurture intergenerational experiences, and to create musical excellence throughout Maryland and the DC/Metro regions.

We aim to achieve our mission by:

  • Fostering and developing an appreciation of choral music, enhancing the cultural life of the community, and providing camaraderie among people of all ages who appreciate the choral arts.
  • Provide a fulfilling musical experience for our members, patrons and audience.
  • Bridging the gap of understanding and tolerance among diverse communities through music.
  • Providing education for the mastery of music through regular rehearsals and performances.

Description

The Maryland Choral Society is a community organization dedicated to providing quality performances to music enthusiasts in the Washington area. MCS performs several concerts a year that encompass a wide variety of musical styles and periods. MCS was founded in 1971, when a small group of people who shared a common dream of music artistry and quality performance presented their first concert under the direction of Paul Bley. In 1975, Dr. Sandra Willets became artistic director (which was then named the Southern Maryland Choral Society) and the group quickly earned a reputation as one of the more accomplished choruses in the metropolitan area. For the next sixteen years, the chorus sang under the leadership of several outstanding artistic directors, including Dr. Craig Jessop (former Mormon Tabernacle Choir Director), Dr. Samuel Gordon, Julianne S. Turrentine, Ernest Johnson, James Holloway, Dr. Don Armstrong and Jeanne Kelly.
