Hello, and thank you for your interest! Are you great at connecting with adults from diverse backgrounds in a genuine, nonjudgmental way? Are you patient, empathetic, flexible, and able to simplify concepts in a respectful way? Do you like to make learning enjoyable, interesting, and relevant to everyday life? If yes, then becoming a GED/HiSET tutor in our program may be a good fit for you! No previous experience needed; training and materials provided. Please note: Due to the time it takes to complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, this is not a quick-start opportunity, and we generally ask for a 6-month minimum commitment. Level & Expectations Check: On average, our GED/HiSET learners are in their 30s--so have been out of school for a while--and often enter the program with academic skills at about a 5th-6th grade English level and 4th grade Math level. This does not mean it will take them years to prepare to pass their exams, but it takes on average at least one year for most learners to prepare for, schedule, and pass the series of subject tests. Learners may want to achieve this important goal but may not start out with realistic expectations about how much work it will take to achieve it, how long it will take, and how to fit tutoring into their everyday life. So, understanding this and having some initial flexibility is important. Expectations for adult learners doing practice work (homework) in between sessions should not be what you might expect from a child in school. While extra practice is especially important for the GED/HiSET program, generally these expectations should be lower to start with while learning about your tutee and developing trust, setting them up for a positive, successful experience. Teaching or tutoring experience and academic knowledge, while valuable, will not necessarily go far in this program if the adult learner isn't comfortable, feels judged or not respected and, thus, stops attending sessions. Therefore, our program is designed to be learner-centered, not teacher-centered. Since many adult learners in this program have had previous negative school experiences, even educational trauma, the most important skill or ability for this program is to be able to establish a positive rapport and trust with an adult learner from the first meeting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Basic Description of GED Tutoring: The Adult Literacy GED Tutor provides one-to-one tutoring to an adult in need of improving their basic skills in preparation for the GED or HiSET high school equivalency exams. Tutors may choose to tutor in the areas of Reading/Writing (English) and/OR Math, or in any subject area as needed. We focus initially on building reading/writing and math since those skills translate to the other subject tests. If you're not familiar with the HiSET, you can learn more about it here. https://hiset.ets.org/ It will be covered in training and is the option we encourage most of our learners to do because the scoring is more forgiving, there's still a paper test option, and it's a little cheaper. Scheduling/Location: 1-2 times weekly 1-2 hours per session Virtually or in-person at any of our 28 branches, or other public place https://www.saclibrary.org/Locations Training and materials are all provided free of charge to tutors and learners. Pre-service training and orientation is required before beginning tutoring; ongoing support is provided through tutor meetings and workshops as well as digital, self-study resources. We look forward to hearing from you!

Hello, and thank you for your interest! We are looking for a new tutor to take over an existing small group. The group currently meets Tuesdays, 4:30-6:00, but there may be some flexibility. This group meets at the North Highlands-Antelope library. It could be helpful if the tutor has some Russian speaking skills, but it's not necessary. This is similar to our other ESL tutoring opportunity for 1:1 tutoring but specific for small-group tutoring. The tutoring is not just for conversation but also reading/writing skills. Small-group tutoring is for approximately 2-6 learners at a time, of a similar ability. In this case the learners are at a beginning high to low intermediate level of English, and there are about 3-5 learners usually. Tutoring sessions would be 1-2 hours once a week minimum, preferably twice a week, and we ask for a 6-month minimum commitment. This group currently meets once a week but used to meet twice. It may be possible to have two tutors who work together in some way, either to take turns so that you only tutor once a week each, or to work together if the group is on the larger side. Free study/teaching materials provided to the tutor and learners. Pre-service training required and ongoing support provided. Please contact us if interested to learn more about this specific opportunity! We look forward to hearing from you.

Help empower an adult in your community to reach their potential by tutoring them in basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills for everyday life, work, future education, and increased self-esteem. This part of our tutoring program is geared towards native English speakers, although we serve English language learners as well. Learn more about the learners who join our program in their own words by watching the video below. You do not need to be a teacher or even have a college degree to be an effective tutor for this program. We're looking for tutors who are empathetic, patient, and creative thinkers and problem-solvers so that this can translate to creative, learner-centered peer teaching (not top-down, tutor/teacher-centered teaching). We are focusing on in-person tutoring again for this program area as it is generally easier and more productive for lower level adult learners. Note: Due to the time it takes to complete training and to find a learner who is a good match, this is not a quick-start opportunity, and we ask for a 6-month minimum commitment from both tutor and learner. Did you know? An estimated 230,000 adults in Sacramento County need to improve their reading and writing skills to better help themselves, their families, and their communities. Of those adults who are unemployed, 75% have reading and writing difficulties. According to the National Institute for Literacy, 20% of the adults in Sacramento County have difficulty with reading, writing, and computational skills necessary to function in everyday life. The average adult learner in our program is between 30 and 50 years old, but the age range is very broad. What can you do? Consider being a tutor if you are 21 or older, able to read, write, and speak English clearly; have basic computer skills; and are willing to do the following : Tutor at least once a week for 1-2 hours each session, plus some lesson-planning; Commit to a minimum of 6 months or longer; Complete pre-service tutor training and orientation; Complete monthly tutor reports online; Participate in tutor in-service meetings throughout the year to reinforce your tutoring skills. How it works - what happens after training After completing pre-training, a tutor is matched with an adult learner based on preferred location(s) and day/time availability. Tutoring takes place at any of the 28 library branches, or at some other public location; or remotely/virtually, via basic phone call or video call, etc. Basic materials for tutor and learner are provided for free. Literacy staff provides assistance and support as learners progress through the program. A tutor may work with more than one learner individually if the tutor wishes. We look forward to hearing from you!
