VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

In fiscal year 2008-2009, San Diego County Library gained a net value of $1.3 million dollars by training and including in daily operations 2,225 volunteers (a 17.5% increase) who donated 74,209 hours of their time, an average of 33 hours per volunteer.

Volunteers perform a variety of duties, including, but not limited to: presenting and assisting with branch events, tutoring adult literacy learners, reading to children in the "Grandparents and Books" programs, helping students with homework, leading book discussion groups, and serving as Internet docents.

The County of San Diego Board of Supervisors recognize the important contribution volunteers make to all County departments in an annual event each year. County departments each nominate their own "Volunteer of the Year." A PowerPoint Presentation of the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors' Volunteer of the Year presentation can be accessed Library branches hold volunteer recognition events each year during National Volunteer Recognition Month in April.

The minimum age to volunteer is 14. Parents need to sign a parental permission form for volunteers between the ages of 14 and 16.
