Mission Statement

Through a long-term relationship and a program of mentoring, tutoring, cultural and recreational activities, life skills enrichment and tuition assistance for higher education, "I Have A Dream" - A. D. Williams Chapter will motivate and empower 60 low-income children to reach their own education and career goals.

The Dream for our Chapter is that some years hence 60 young people will enter into a productive life, who otherwise might have fallen through the cracks of society.

100% of Dreamers will graduate from high school with a plan, prepared for post-secondary education and with tuition assistance.

Description

The "I Have A Dream" - A. D. Williams Chapter is a licensed Chapter of the national "I Have A Dream" Foundation. The National Foundation sets standards and provides guidance, certain resources, technical assistance and support to the Sponsors and staff of our project. The Foundation has a 25+ year history of experience and success in helping Dreamers reach their goals. The Foundation's "roadmap" is an important part of the framework for our program.

Our program is led by two Sponsors from St. Luke's - John Stewart and Jeronia Blue - and one from Ebenezer - Tanya Palmer. Minister Walter Hughes from Ebenezer and Rev. Dan Mathews from St. Luke's serve as Clergy Liaisons to the program. In addition, members of the two churches and other people from the community serve as resources to the Sponsors via an Advisory Board.

It is the Chapter's responsibility to retain a full-time Program Director (PD) to work closely with the Dreamers and their families from the start of the program through the first year of college (12 year total commitment - 5 years remaining.) The PD, Carletta S. Hurt, is the only full-time staff for the program. Parishioners from both churches and other persons from the community volunteer as Mentors, Tutors, Volunteers and "Stage Crew" to carry out the program's mission.
