Lanakila Meals on Wheels relies on community support to serve more than 1,800 seniors every day. As Hawaii’s largest meal provider, services reach our kupuna with the greatest need in low-income and rural areas. Delivering so much more than a meal, our staff and volunteers also provide companionship and a bridge to support services, helping our elders stay in their own homes with dignity.
It all started in 1971 with a lunch wagon at A’ala Park, in downtown Honolulu. Serving hot meals to seniors in need and those suffering from Tuberculosis, it was the saving grace to many people. The need grew and Lanakila Meals on Wheels was formed, delivering meals all around the island to our deserving kupuna. For many, it was the only meal they ate all day and the visit with the delivery volunteer was the only personal interaction they had. It was their link to the community and upon this discovery, needless to say, Lanakila Meals on Wheels’ mission grew stronger. Now in its 41st year, Lanakila Meals on Wheels has expanded to be the largest and only island-wide meal service program for seniors, offering home delivery and group dining options. We are a volunteer driven program and serve over 250,000 meals each year on over 90 different routes all over Oahu.
