The Samaritans of New York is the local branch of the world's oldest and largest volunteer crisis response network with 400 centers in 40 countries. Samaritans is devoted to helping people who feel depressed, in crisis or suicidal as well as those who provide care and support to people in crisis and those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
Samaritans is a non-religious, non-profit organization that runs NYC's confidential, 24-hour crisis response hotline staffed entirely by trained volunteers who provide emotional support to people who are depressed, overwhelmed or in crisis; as well as support groups for those who have lost a loved one to suicide and public education programs that raise awareness around suicide and the keys to its prevention.

Although it has been some years since I volunteered with Samaritans, it was one of the most interesting and enriching experiences of my life. They honor the heritage of the organization which has been helping people for many many years. The training of the volunteers is a wonderful experience in itself and it is truly impressive how well they prepare volunteers to talk to people in crisis. Most importantly, I believe I made a difference in people's lives as a Samaritans volunteer.
