Mission Statement

First Book provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books. Description An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 60 million free and low cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them through an extensive volunteer network, First Book National Book Bank large-scale book distributions, and the First Book Marketplace offering high-quality titles at reduced cost. Working with existing community-based tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy programs, First Book provides books on an ongoing basis to at-risk children, enabling them to build their own home libraries.

Description

Your help is needed to help provide books to children 0 to 18 years of age. Please contact our website for opportunities--www.firstbook.org

First Book- Portage County began distributing books to programs serving low-income children in 2005. During this first year, First Book- Portage County awarded grants in excess of $7,000.00 and almost 3,000 books to children participating in local programs. Through our continuing fundraising efforts, we have been able to distribute books to 1561children in 20 community programs since we began our efforts. Our goal is to continue to distribute 12 books a year to children from low-income families and to increase the number of children we reach in Portage County. Last year, we were able to give 4038 books to children in Portage County. This year, our goal is to double that amount to 8000 books given to children in the county. The First Book Advisory Board is comprised of individuals from the community representing local organizations and businesses.
