Mission Statement

To engage our communities to provide all children with access to books through empowering our youth in service.

Description

BookEnds believes that a literate child is the foundation of a thriving community. By providing access to books, BookEnds gives children the resources to develop literacy skills and to experience the joy and imagination of reading.

BookEnds' diverse recipients include inner-city schools, youth centers, homeless shelters, family literacy centers, after-school enrichments programs, children's group homes and juvenile detention facilities.

In many of our recipient organizations the ratio of books to kids is just 3 to 1. The national average is 22 to 1.

BookEnds also believes in the power of community service. Through BookEnds, students have the opportunity to change their lives and the lives of others through community service. Student volunteers collect, sort and personally deliver donated books to create quality libraries and inspire a passion for reading.

Our founder was an 8-year-old boy who believed he could make a difference, and led his peers in a book drive to start a much-needed library at Hollygrove Children's Home. BookEnds began in 1998, over 170,000 BookEnds student volunteers have filled 499 barren libraries throughout the Greater Los Angeles area, delivering more than 1.4 million books into the hands of over 401,000 at-risk students.

BookEnds is proud of our partnerships with corporations and community organizations that provide the diverse resources - from book shelves to paint to financial support - to help turn a child with a new book into a reader.
