Mission Statement

The purpose of Tacoma Area Literacy Council is to enable adult speakers of English and speakers of other languages to acquire necessary basic level skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing English toward their goals and self-sufficiency. We also resolve to reach out to diverse communities in order to serve adult students.

Description

TALC conducts two tutor training sessions of 15 hours each, twice a year, in the spring and fall. These sessions are taught by a certified trainer and prepare our volunteers to teach adult American-born and foreign-born students. After training, our new tutors are matched with a student and they meet twice a week for 1-1/2 to 2 hours each time in a public library for a minimum of 6 months. Our volunteers and students come from all over Pierce County and meet at a time and place convenient to both of them, one-on-one.

TALC has monthly meetings with speakers to address various literacy problems/issues/areas of interest and a monthly newsletter: JOTS. In addition to this support, "refresher" courses are offered throughout the year for our tutors.

TALC is affiliated with Proliteracy and offers all student and tutor materials at half-price because of grants received from The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.

Our students come with various goals from wanting to pass a driver's license test, to helping their children with their homework, to getting into college or getting a better job. They all, however, have one goal in common: to improve their literacy skills. TALC does not charge for these services.
