Description

Ohio Living the largest and most experienced not-for-profit provider of home health, hospice and continuing care retirement communities in Ohio.

Hospice is a special kind of caring. Hospice care is patient and family centered and seeks to provide support and comfort to those facing a life limiting illness. Volunteers play a large role in this effort by sharing their skills and interests in a manner that enriches the quality of life for those they serve.

Medicare also recognizes the importance of volunteers in the delivery of hospice care. Medicare requires that hospice utilize volunteers from their local community to augment the care the hospice agency provides. Nationally, over 100,000 people serve as hospice volunteers and give millions of hours of their time to serve terminally ill patients and their families.

It is a pleasure to work with Senior Independence Staff and even more of a pleasure working with the patients. I found this opportunity thru VolunteerMatch.org and have been pleased with my experience over the past several months.

Senior Independence Hospice has a great reputation for caring for patients and their families. Whether it be organizing a one-day house cleaning and landscape crew or renting a hall and throwing a party for patient, family, and friends, SIH will go to great lengths to show love to those in their care. The volunteer coordinator, Jennifer VanVorhis, has a huge heart for caring for the patients that her volunteers meet. She is open and honest about what to expect with each patient and is also very flexible with where and when a volunteer is able to help out. SIH also has Veteran-specific volunteer opportunities, which were especially rewarding for me. As a Veteran myself, it was a joy to sit with and hear about all that the previous generations had experienced in their time of service and I liked that I could offer them help after all they've done for our country. I would highly recommend Senior Independence Hospice to anyone looking for a great volunteering experience!
