Mission Statement

Badlands National Park is a unit of the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The park's mission is to protect and educate a world audience about the park's primary resources: geology, paleontology, human history, and prairie ecosystem.

Description

Located in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park was established in 1929 primarily for its fossil resources and dramatic scenery. In the 1970s, changes in cultural values and ecological principles added the human history of the area, extending back 11,000 years and the rapidly vanishing North American prairie and its associated wildlife, as critical park themes. The park has 50 permanent employees supplemented with seasonal and volunteer staff. Housing is available in the park at no cost to volunteers as long as they work a minimum of 40 hours per week for the park.
