A community-based crisis nursery and child care center called "Kanabec Care and Crisis Nursery"(KCCN) has been established in Mora MN. KCCN focuses on providing a safe environment for children at risk of abuse or neglect in the Kanabec county area. It is expected that through providing a system of 24 hour emergency child care that it will be possible to have a direct and positive effect on the well being of young children by giving parents a chance to ask for help before child abuse or neglect occurs.
When a parent calls the facility, staff will assist parents by determining what kind of placement is needed, 1) short term childcare for 2-8 hours, 2) interim daycare for up to 40 hours in one week, or 3) an overnight placement for up to 72hours. KCCN will also link parents to other services as needed by collaborating with other local organizations, such as Head Start, Mora Crisis Pregnancy Center, Social Services, The Refuge, and WINDOWS. With funding KCCN will operate with 2 full and 1 part time staff members. In addition, a Board of Directors made up of community leaders and concerned citizens will provide overall sanctioning of the Center's operation. Periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess the value of KCCN on a) helping lower the incidence of reported child abuse cases, b) increasing the availability of quality child care in the community, c) providing parents a central linkage to other services in a non-stigmatic environment, d) effectively using volunteers as a major factor in helping improve the lives of children. A local advisory committee made up of parents, and social service professionals, and volunteers will also be formed. They will meet quarterly to make recommendations and discuss issues relevant to the program.
