Mission Statement

The Gifted Learning Project's (GLP) Mission Statement

It is the sincere mission of the GLP to be dedicated to achieving the following goals:

1. Educate the general public about learning disabilities.

2. Provide school in-service programs, videos, books on tape/CD, and DVDs.

3. Host a GLP website.

We believe that by combining these three methods of outreach, our organization will achieve our goal of increasing awareness and understanding about learning disabilities. These activities will account for approximately 20 percent of our organization's total activity.

Develop and/or distribute computer software and other resources on a nationwide basis to help individuals with learning disabilities effectively improve their comprehensive skills, including reading, writing, math, and reasoning, as well as social skills and self-esteem. These activities will account for approximately 20 percent of our organization's total activity.

Research, investigate, test, and approve or disapprove current resources available to individuals with learning disabilities. GLP will provide a free listing of approved resources via its website. These activities will account for approximately 20 percent of our organization's total activity.

Support Network and Pride Program: The GLP also will serve as a support network for individuals with learning disabilities by providing one-on-one mentoring via the phone and/or e-mail. The GLP website will include a listing of famous individuals with learning disabilities who have excelled in their careers. These activities will account for approximately 20 percent of our organization's total activity.

Scholarship Program: The GLP plans to provide scholarships to individuals (both adults and children) with learning disabilities. This activity, which has not yet begun, will account for approximately 20 percent of our organization's total activity.

Description

What is The Gifted Learning Project?

In 1999, a group of advocates for people with learning disabilities unified to bring better resources to schools, libraries, parents, and the public. The group formed a unique twist, not focusing on the challenges of the individual, but on the strengths that is used to overcome the challenges. The Gifted Learning Project is a grassroots, nonprofit (501(c)3) organization started and operated by people with learning disabilities and/or with immediate family members whom have learning disabilities. No board member receives any pay -- all are volunteers. We work from our hearts because we understand what it is like to have a disability. We feel that having a disability is like modern art. No two people see the same picture, so why should we assume that all people learn the same? Learning is like a tailored suit; it takes a while and is unique to the individual. To learn, you must use your gifts, and so we have the Gifted Learning Project
