You can apply to be a CASA volunteer online at www.CASARiverRegion.org/volunteer There are 150-200 children in our region at any given time who are on the waiting list for a CASA volunteer advocate to be trained and assigned to their case. These children have experienced abuse and/or neglect, and through no fault of their own, are involved in the family court system. They need someone like you, to be a safe adult and role-model, a friend, an advocate and voice for them in court. A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a community volunteer-like you-who is interviewed, screened, and trained by our CASA Advocacy staff and then appointed and sworn in by a Family Court Judge to advocate for the best interests of a child who has been abused/ and or neglected and receiving intervention services from The Cabinet of Health and Family Services or 'CPS'. This child is either still in the home with his/her parents and they are experiencing remedial in-home intervention services, or the child has been temporarily removed from his/her home and placed with a family member, a foster parent or in a residential facility. As a CASA volunteer, you have the opportunity to be a safe adult, a mentor and a trustworthy friend in the life of a child who has been abused and/ or neglected. You will observe the conditions of the child's placement, you will monitor their progress in school or daycare, you will report back to court every few months with an update on the placement and progress of the child's care, and his/her health and education. You will help to ensure that the child's perspective is heard and carefully considered in the court process, and you will help to ensure on a weekly basis, that the child's needs are being met by their parents or temporary guardians. CASA of the River Region is a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency incorporated in November of 1984. CASA is a member of the National CASA Association. Last year, nearly 60,000 CASA volunteers served more than 240,000 abused and neglected children through 954 program offices nationwide. CASA volunteers have helped more than two million abused children since the first CASA program was established in 1977. There are currently 20 CASA program across the state of Kentucky. Our program serves children in Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Trimble, Shelby and Spencer counties. A child is waiting for a volunteer like you.
