Mission Statement

Skagit Literacy is a non-profit organization that recruits, trains and supports patient and open-minded volunteer tutors, carefully placing them with adult learners who pay no fees for this service. These efforts are supported by Skagit County Community Action, Best PLACE, United Way, Washington Office of Adult Literacy, private donations, and the good work of our volunteers.

Description

Skagit Literacy provides free English literacy training services to adults in Skagit County who need one-to-one and small group tutoring assistance in basic reading, writing, speaking and listening so that they may be able to participate more fully in society. Adult learners in this program include people form whom English is a second language and under-educated adults wishing to gain literacy skills. Our community-based literacy program provides service to adult learners without requiring them to meet any predetermined criteria with regard to income, family status or employment. Our volunteer tutors are trained and encouraged to focus attention on the leanrer's needs and life situation and to then guide study that is non-threatening and individually focused.
