Mission Statement

The Vancouver Housing Authority Statewide VISTA Program: Is an umbrella project, with individual VISTA placements in public and non-profit organizations throughout Washington State. As part of an umbrella project, VISTA Members receive an extra layer of supportive services including quarterly trainings throughout Washington state, an annual teambuilding retreat, project monitoring and technical assistance. In addition, subsidized housing and child care is sometimes available.

Description

AmeriCorps*VISTA is about finding long-term solutions to the problems of poverty by increasing the capability of low-income people to improve the conditions of their lives. This focus on empowerment and poverty is VISTA's unique niche in the service field, and defines the role of the Volunteer. On December 12, 1964, just four months after the VISTA legislation was enacted, President and Lady Bird Johnson welcomed the first group of twenty VISTA volunteers to the White House. "Your pay will be low; the conditions of your labor often will be difficult. But you will have the satisfaction of leading a great national effort and you will have the ultimate reward which comes to those who serve their fellow man."
