The mission of Creating Vibrant Communities is to identify neighborhood talents, skills and assets and to nurture resident-driven community building projects by providing learning opportunities and connecting people and resources.
Creating Vibrant Communities is a community development nonprofit based in the historic West End neighborhood in Atlanta. The CVC approach to sustainable community revitalization is rooted in the asset based community development (ABCD) principle of identifying and surveying "community assets."CVC is in partnership with the NPU-T Community Food Project to develop a network of "urban farms" within the greater West End . There are currently two sites under cultivation. Our primary farm, on a plot of land generously offered for our use by a community faith based institution, is being used as a community CSA (community supported Agriculture) and Sunday farmer's market. Our new site is Brown Middle School where we are in the process of creating an edible schoolyard, outdoor classroom, and community garden.
The goals of our urban agriculture project are to improve access to high quality, affordable food among low-income households; convert vacant untended lots to productive, green spaces and promote "horticultural literacy" by teaching organic gardening techniques and nutrition classes within the community. With this project we hope to create a local food system, from urban gardening to local farms, which provides high quality fresh food with minimal adverse environmental impact.
