Mission Statement

The SF Tenants Union is a non-profit, membership supported organization. We believe that housing is a basic human right which should be available to all people, regardless of income, and that no person should be homeless for any reason.

Description

The SF Tenants Union provides tenants rights counseling for members and non-members at a drop-in clinic. The SFTU also provides organizing assistance for tenants who want to start building tenants unions. Other SFTU work includes direct action and legislative advocacy, including two successful city propositions. The SFTU is a strong advocate for people who are homeless and provides organizing support for Homes Not Jails, a direct action housing rights organization.

I recently started volunteering as a counselor with SFTU and I am so impressed with the level of devotion the organization has to assisting tenants with their rights. The other counselors are very knowledgeable and in speaking with the tenants that have been helped, everyone is so grateful for the information and resources they receive from SFTU. Hopefully more people will be inspired to start similar tenant union organizations in other cities and other states that provide advice for renters.
