Mission Statement

Empowered Youth works with youth both inside the Maimi-Dade Juvenile Justice Detention Center and when they get out.

Every Friday night we go into the Detention Center and work with the youth on a variety of life and job skills topics, as well as topics such as music, art, communication, anger, motivation...topics that will help them to make better decisions when they return to the community.

We also have programs outside of the detention center facility and need mentors for youth on an on-going basis. People who are willing to commit a minimum of six months to being a mentor.

If you want to make a real difference in the lives of deserving and very undeserved youth, please contact us!

Description

We meet at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Justice Detention Center at 6 p.m. every Friday night, sign in and get a guest pass (only keys and ID are allowed, no cell phones, no pens, etc).

We are in the modulars (where the youth live) by 6:30, greet the youth, introduce ourselves and then present our program. We always try to break into small groups to discuss the topic of the evening, as it is very important for the youth to have an opportunity to feel heard and to get to express themselves.

At around 8 p.m., we distribute snacks to the youth and visit with them until around 8:30.

Mentor opportunities are available on an on-going basis, and are the cornerstone of success for these youth---most of whom do not have father's in their lives and grow up in challenging home environments and violent neighborhoods.

You make huge difference in the lives of these youth...it is time well invested.
