Mission Statement

The Museum of Performance & Design -- formerly San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum -- is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and making available to the public materials documenting the history of the performing arts in the San Francisco Bay Area via exhibitions, educational programs, public events and research facilities. The Museum is further committed to providing materials and programs related to national and international performing arts with special emphasis on dance, musical theater and theatrical design.

Description

Among the most extensive collections of its kind in the United States, the Museum of Performance & Design -- formerly San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum -- comprises a wide variety of holdings relating to the live performing arts. The more than two million items which include books, magazines, videotapes, radio interviews, musical theater recordings, programs, photographs, personal papers, and archives are accessible to anyone free of charge. In addition, The Museum offers an extensive range of special programs including lectures, conversations with famous performers, mini-courses, school projects, teacher workshops, publications, and numerous exhibitions.
