Mission Statement

Trail Blazers facilitates the development of values and life skills essential for productive citizenship in youth through outdoor experiential education, year-round mentoring and leadership training.

Description

Since our inception 130 years ago in 1887 as Life’s Fresh Air Fund to present-day Trail Blazers, we have continually provided children and teens with programs where they develop skills and values for life proven to contribute to long-term positive outcomes. Our portfolio of summer and year-round programs include:

* Summer Outdoor Experiential Education Program - Sleep Away Camp: Children live for 2 or 4 weeks at our rustic Sussex County, NJ site, participating in a "decentralized" adventure-based educational program they design themselves in collaboration with their Group Leaders.

* Summer Outdoor Experiential Education Program - Brooklyn Day Camp: Brooklyn children who are too young for a sleepaway experience explore and connect to nature in their community while building life skills and environmental science knowledge. This is also a great feeder for our sleep away programs.

* Leaders in Training Program: Teens participate in summer workshops to develop leadership skills, community engagement, and work experience by assisting/shadowing staff in various roles. Year-round summits build upon the summer to provide continual self-growth.

* Under One Sky (UOS) After-School: Year-round environmental science and urban stewardship provide the context through which students connect to their communities and establish the life skills, attitudes, and knowledge proven to contribute to success and achievement.
