Mission Statement

The Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (H.E.L.P) of Portland is a community literacy and mentoring project that provides one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to both adults and children. We train both our students and mentors with the end result of taking people off the streets, away from the readily available drugs and gangs, and place each person with a trained and prepared mentor whos goal it is to raise that student's literacy and communication skills to a level acceptable to employers throughout the area. We believe this to be a core solution to a core problem. The student who CAN study will study, given the interest and opportunity. Solving illiteracy itself and handling what we see as the root cause of disinterest in study will allow the student to be come cabable in his studies once again. This capacity for study will then translate into good, successful students and employees. For the person being tutored, it will awaken interest in learning (making real learning again possible) and the student's sights as to his or her own potentials and goals in life.

Description

H.E.L.P is a program that trains tutors in an effective program that teaches students how to learn. In other words, we don't just teach people to read or help kids with their homework, we actually teach them what prevents them from really learning. There are three basic barries to study that we show all our students how to recognize and overcome. A stuent can learn ANYTHING he or she wants to IF they know the mechanics of proper study. Each tutor is trained in making sure a student can apply these ideas and thus reach his full potential as a student.
