Mission Statement

Rooted in Catholic tradition and the Spirit of the Presentation Sisters, the mission of Saint Michael Academy is to educate young women in a loving and caring community, assisting each to develop her unique gifts and talents to live a fully Christian life.

Description

Founded by the Presentation Sisters in 1874, St. Michael's is a familiar beacon in New York's "Hell's Kitchen" neighborhood, providing the poor with a caring parish, quality education and an active convent. Most parishioners come from the large, low-income housing projects in close walking distance from our building, and our students span the five boroughs and a few even from New Jersey. At this time, 86% of the students live in homes with incomes below the United States Federal standard for poverty -- most of them led by single parents. Ninety-six percent have minority ethnic backgrounds. Despite the challenges they face, St. Michael's works with students to achieve remarkable success rates. By combining a college preparatory curriculum with a variety of extra-curriculum programs (including mentoring from New York's business community), a dedicated teaching staff with an average tenure of fifteen years, and the daily influence of an on-site convent, 99% of our students graduate and 94% go on to post-secondary education.
