Mission Statement

Inspired by Jewish values of social justice, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) fosters literacy among disadvantaged students in public schools by engaging volunteers as literacy tutors.

JCL recruits, trains, places and supports tutors in public elementary schools and after school programs throughout the Bay Area.

Description

The Jewish Coalition for Literacy is a coalition of Jewish organizations, synagogues, campus Hillels and individuals who are joining together to work towards ending the national crisis of illiteracy among schoolchildren. This program is not religious in nature, and we welcome all community members to participate. Tutors work in public schools assisting students reading below grade level.
