Volunteer Services for Animals (VSA) is an organization of volunteers dedicated to animal well-being and the promotion of the human-animal bond through programs of education, advocacy, and assistance.
VSA is a state-wide organization with its Central Headquarters in Providence and 7 chapters located throughout the state of RI. Headquarters is the Humane Education site with the Louis Iacobucci Public Library and base for the Humane Education Program where volunteers visit elementary school children and teach proper pet owner responsiblity. Financial Assistance for Spay/Neuter surgeries and emergency veterinary care are also given through the headquarters office. The Pet Asssisted Therapy program where over 60 volunteers visit over 50 extended care facilities with their pets, brightening the days of the residents, is also based out of the central headquarters office. 5 of the 7 chapters are located with in the municipal shelters. These volunteers strive to make and enforce humane regulations for the shelter. They also facilitate pet adoptions by finding homes for sheltered animals and reunited lost pets with their owners. The Cranston chapter is a community based chapter and not located in the municipal shelter. They have a 24 hour hotline for pet owners in need. The Woonsocket Chapter owns their own building and maintains is a Cat Sanctuary. All the chapters have foster care programs. VSA is a volunteer run organization with over 400 volunteers to 1 full-time and 3 part-time employees. It was established in 1979 and formed in the Providence Municipal shelter.
