Mission Statement

As an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) member, my goal is to procure community resources and volunteers in order to promote educational success for our students at Forwood Elementary School. The program that I create must be sustainable on its own after my year of service is completed in mid-August, 2001.

Description

We, the faculty as well as myself, are looking to expand our students' learning outside the realm of the classroom. Our school is located in the center of an economically, socially, and culturally diverse suburb. We feel that there are many untapped resources in the community that can be used for the benefit of our students. We need to incorporate traditional as well creative methods of teaching to improve the reading and math skills of our students. Through at least one hour a week, we are hoping that volunteers and mentors can boost our children's esteem and scores.
