Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Walks of Life brings together schools, educational support programs, and a broad spectrum of industries to improve the academic and career preparation of students in selected New York City public schools. Our mission is to help students better understand the connection between the classroom and the workplace and prepare students for the world of work. Currently we work with students in Walton HS, IS 117, PS/MS 95, and PS 28 in the Bronx. Educators have developed partnerships and participated in activities such as job shadowing, classroom presentations, company visits, career days, community service/service learning activities, unpaid internships and paid summer internships. These Walks of Life activities have provided opportunities for students to learn about the workplace. Walks of Life focuses on improving academic performance, developing employability skills, and providing extensive career information. To assist in accomplishing these goals, we work together with volunteers who are interested in participating in one or more of the following: * Partner with a class throughout the semester to work on activities connected to your knowledge base -- establish an ongoing relationship as a mentor. * Host worksite visits/tours to educated classes about the range of jobs and careers in that specific organization/industry. * Participate in Career Day at a Walks of Life school. * Provide a job shadowing experience that involves pairing a class (10-30 students) with employees on the job, so students can experience (first-hand) a part of the a day at work. * Provide a structured, unpaid internship for a qualified high school junior or senior. * Offer community service/ service learning opportunities for students.
During the school year, hundreds of people like you will meet with students to share their knowledge and experience. We invite you to join us. Please feel free to contact us at 212-696-5717, ext. 120 with any questions or suggestions. Thank you!
