Project Read of North San Mateo County

Description

Adult learners in Project Read, together with volunteer tutors, improve their reading and writing skills so they can be more effective in their everyday lives at home, at work and in their communities. An estimated 20% of adults in North San Mateo County need help with basic reading and writing skills. Many adults have trouble with everyday tasks like using a phone book or writing a check. Imagine the pleasure of reading a book for the first time, voting, or taking a promotion instead of turning it down. That's what happens at Project Read. Since Project Read started in 1985, we have trained more than 1,195 volunteer tutors and served over 1,334 adult learners. At any given time, 120 tutoring pairs are active. Our innovative program has been recognized both locally and nationally as a model adult learning program.
