Mission Statement

Clean Water Action Council works to clean up or prevent pollution, in order to protect public health, wildlife and the local economy.

Description

We are a 15-year-old local non-profit citizen organization, with approximately 2,500 local members, staffed largely by volunteers. We work primarily in Northeast Wisconsin, and participate in several networks (especially Great Lakes United and Wisconsin Stewardship Network). We are led by a Board of Directors of local citizens, who are elected at our Annual Awards Banquet. Funding is primarily from local membership dues and subscriptions to our 8-page monthly newsletter. Our activities focus on raising public awareness through our webpage, door-to-door campaigns, factsheet distribution, newsletters, press conferences, public programs, public rallies, testimony at hearings, etc. We also research issues and serve on citizen advisory committees for the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources and the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems. Key issues include (1) Cleaning-up the PCB & Mercury contaminated sediments in the Fox River; (2) Promoting energy efficiency and renewables; (3) Stopping metallic sulfide mining and protecting ORWs ---outstanding resource waters; (4) Promoting transportation alternatives and efficiency; (5) Promoting careful landuse management. Other issues we've worked on include: waste incinerators, non-point pollution controls (factory farms & manure), toxic air emissions, wetland protection, campaign finance reform, restoration of the Wisconsin Public Intervenor Office and restoration of the DNR Secretary's independence.
