Mission Statement

Salish Sea Expedition's mission is to inspire a passion for exploring, understanding and respecting the marine environment through hands-on scientific inquiry on Puget Sound.

Description

Founded in 1996, Salish Sea Expeditions (SSE) is 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization in Puget Sound that introduces 5th-12th grade students to marine science through 2-5 day field research expeditions in the spring and fall. SSE science staff work with teachers and students students in the classroom to custom design a marine research project which they then conduct from the decks of the 61' sailboat Carlyn. Students are the key decision makers in every aspect of the program, from choosing a study project to developing a hypothesis, determining a sampling plan, collecting data, and determining the research results. Furthermore, students organize and conduct all non-academic aspects of their expedition, including sail handling, navigation, meal planning and cooking. Our public, private and home school programs give local educators a means to provide practical, hands-on research experiences that incorporate the basic math and science concepts learned in a classroom. Since its initial programs in 1997, SSE has introduced "real marine science" to over 1000 students in the Puget Sound region, and our clientele continues to grow.
