Mission Statement
AXIS Dance Company, based in Oakland, CA, is an internationally acclaimed company that performs professional quality contemporary dance created through the collaboration of dancers with and without disabilities. AXIS teaches dance and provides education on creative collaboration, dance, and disability through community outreach and education programs. AXIS builds bridges between dance and performing arts communities and the disability community. The company is committed to promoting and supporting this form of dance locally, nationally, and internationally.
Description
AXIS Dance Company, has gained national and international recognition for artistic innovation in the area of physically integrated dance. AXIS has created over two dozen repertory works, two full length works and two works for young audiences. The company has been featured in a number of documentary videos which received numerous awards. AXIS credits include nominations for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Choreography in 1996 and 1998. In addition, AXIS collaborated with Dance Umbrella of Boston in June of 1996 to develop and co-curate the first International Festival of Wheelchair Dance, an historic 3 week event of classes, workshops, performances and dialogues about integrated dance.Since 1987, AXIS Dance Company has created an innovative body of work, promoting artistic collaborations between dancers with and without diabilities. AXIS has performed in theaters and dance spaces at its home base in the Bay Area and on tour throughout the U.S. as well as in Germany and Siberia. Among the company's most notable achievements are performances at Dance Umbrella's Aerial Dance Festival in Boston; The First International Artistic Dance Workshop in Cologne, Germany; CAL Performances/UAM/PFA in Berkeley; The Walker Arts Center/Southern Theater "Out There Festival" in Minneapolis; FINIST in Novosibirsk, Siberia; Central Park Summerstage in New York and Dance Umbrella's 15th Year Gala Benefit. The company's latest work, 'Ta Kala,' has been nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Best Choreography in 1998.
