Mission Statement

The mission of New River Community Action is to promote and support the well-being and self-reliance of individuals, families and communities.

Description

HEAD START provides comprehensive developmental services to eligible pre-school children and their families. Family-focused services emphasize education, nutrition, parent involvement, social services and preventative health care.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE / FOOD PANTRIES AND CLOTHING provides assistance for clothing, utilities, heating fuel, health needs, rent or mortgage plus access and referral to other organizations. Food pantries are available for those in need.

CHIP (Children's Health Improvement Partnership) provides access to primary health care to pregnant women and families with children ages birth to seven. Parent education and support for family goals is provided through home visiting case management services.

HOMELESS INTERVENTION PROGRAM prevents or alleviates homelessness by providing temporary assistance in the form of no- interest loans for mortgages and grants for rent

VA CARES (Virginia Community Action Re-Entry System) assists ex-offenders in making a successful transition from prison or jail to society.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM of Floyd and Giles Counties provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for adults age 55 and over in the communities they serve.

Homebuyer Classes supports first-time homebuyers in the process of purchasing, financing and maintaining a home.

HOUSING COUNSELING provides support and resources related to housing situations such as pre- and post-purchase, mortgage default counseling, rental counseling, fair housing, and homelessness.

RESPONSIBLE RIDES provides credit-challenged individuals the opportunity to purchase affordable and reliable used vehicles. This program is a partnership between NRCA, TAP, Freedom First Credit Union, Freedom First Insurance and Enterprise Car Rental.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE provides individuals and families assistance with tax preparation for potential increase in annual income resulting from earned income and child care tax credits.

HOME REPAIR PROGRAMS improve the safety, stability and physical accessibility of housing owned by low-income families by providing funds to purchase materials for non-cosmetic repairs. Labor is provided by the home owners, their family or community volunteers.

HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE supports families who lack enough money to purchase food and other items during the holidays.

LIFE SKILLS EDUCATION provides workshops and publications focus upon self-sufficiency, parenting, economic literacy and healthy family life.

OUTREACH AND REFERRAL provides assistance to participants for accessing home weatherization, water/ waste water improvements and other housing and human services.

FAMILY DEVELOPMENT CREDENTIALING provides NRCA front-line staff with tools, skills and information to assist families in their efforts to achieve healthy self-reliance by building on families’ strengths.
