Mission Statement

To make DC the nation's literacy capital by showing children the fun and value of reading books.

Description

START creates neighborhood summer book clubs for children ages 5 to 14 in the DC Metropolitan area. Over the summer "learning gap" the book clubs help motivate children to want to read books and thus to learn to read. START also trains volunteers to read one-on-one with children in a book club over the summer months.
